Learning British Sign Language takes time, patience and a lot of dedication. For me, it started with just a few simple signs and grew into something I could never have imagined. Over the years, I’ve worked my way through the levels, achieved my Level 6 qualification, and now use my skills to help make the world more accessible for others.
How it all began
I first came across BSL many years ago. I learnt how to sign my name, some colours and a few family signs. At the time, I never thought it would become such an important part of my life. One day, I saw a post from Complete Communication (which became Complete Training) on social media announcing a new BSL Level 1 course. My sister, who works in a nursery, thought it would be useful for the children she supports, so we decided to sign up together. That decision changed everything.
The course was friendly and supportive, and we quickly became part of a group of people all learning something new together. With the guidance of my deaf teacher and the Complete Training team, we both passed Level 1. I loved the experience and knew I wanted to keep going.
I went on to study BSL Level 2 with Complete Training and fell in love with the language. The lessons were engaging and gave me a much deeper understanding of deaf culture and the importance of communication. What began as curiosity had grown into a real passion, and I realised I wanted BSL to be part of my future.
When I moved to Bristol to start university, I didn’t want to lose momentum, so I carried on learning and enrolled on Level 3. I travelled home one weekend a month for lessons. My teacher, Sharon, encouraged me to aim high and gave me the confidence to think about becoming a BSL/English interpreter one day.
Reaching Level 6 and beyond
With my family’s support, especially my mum’s encouragement, I kept going. Yes, her encouragement might be so I pay her back for the courses one day, but it’s still appreciated! I recently achieved my BSL Level 6 qualification, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Looking back, it’s hard to believe this all started with a few basic signs. Every bit of time and effort was worth it.
Today, I work as a Business Development and Events Coordinator for The Inclusivity Group, helping to make festivals, theatre shows and live events more accessible for deaf, disabled and neurodivergent audiences. Seeing BSL interpreters bring performances to life is something truly special, and it’s a privilege to play a part in making that happen.
I truly believe that learning even a little bit of sign language can make a difference. It helps build connections and creates a more inclusive world. The teachers at Complete Training supported me at every stage, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
